I agree totally with your verdict Christie. I have not read the Twilight series, I do not watch Sookie Stackhouse on HBO, and when I heard this book had vampires in it, I nearly wrote it off as a bandwagon add-on. But as I read reviews comparing it to Steven King's "The Stand" and several other favorites, I decided to indulge my curiosity. I am so thankful I did. What a great ride it was! One more thing. This did not feel like reading an 800 page book. It was over way too fast.

I too feel the vast emptiness that the Schwartzengraber's created when they left our lives. Even with all of their flaws, I loved them so deeply. Mostly because I knew the sentiment was reciprocated unconditionally. The desperate longing in Dad's voice, for relationships lost, always made my heart ache.

I can see so vividly the dad of our childhood that you described, almost as if it were yesterday. Most of the time that childhood exists in some other lifetime, too far removed for actual memory.

When I think of him I remember:
How he loved long hair, on us especially.
The way he'd tell us, "don't get your panties in a bind" when we were restless.
Goulash.
Sunburns and strawberries (you know the kind).
How he would continue to play his guitar, even when we held the string in an attempt to get his attention.
His ambitions, regardless of the obstacles.
Christmas.
Stubbornness.

It is probably for the best that you have no surviving photograph of that house. The Madison House in your mind is undoubtedly much better than the one that actually stands in Corvallis. You will have forgotten the things that were not so perfect.... which is the way I think nostalgia works. And this way, you can be sure that, one day in the near future and when you find yourself living somewhere that isn't Madison House, you CAN and WILL be this happy once again.... regardless of the bricks and timber that surround you. Hang in there lady.... x
